So it looks like you support 'cross being in the Winter Olympics. It's going to be hard to get a snowy course in London in the Summer of 2012 (although they could probably arrange the mud). And in February, everyone will be fit coming off the CX season.

Indeed the whole train of thought around cross and the Olympics is to position as a winter discipline. So yes, dudes would be still flying in February as this is he tail end of the season as you suggest. Similar to how Olympic road racing is near the Worlds in Olympic years.
